Abstract
Previous investigators have presented evidence that depression may be associated with development of cancer and emotional repression, however, consistent results results were not found on emotional repression. This study attempted to delineate
psychological characteristics of patients with lung cancer and control group based on multidimensions of emotional repression, and Eysenck's hypothesis, that people developing cancer are more extraverted and lower neuroticism, psychoticism
scores,
finally, synergistic effects of psychological variables inducing cancer, smoking and alcohol consumption for cancer development.
The subjects were composed of 30 patients with lung cancer 30 contols aged 35-60. In comparing difference between patients with lung cancer and controls on 5 emotional repression variables, patients with lung cancer could be distinguished from
controls
in the aspect of unfulfilled need for distance, anti-emotionality, suppression of anxiety, but they were not different significantly from controls on measures of severity toward oneself and learning failure from consequences.
Patients and control groups were classified by means of the discriminant analysis together with 9 psychological variables. Unfulfilled need for distance, suppression of anxiety, lie or social desirability, neuroticisim and extraversion variables
selected. 79.3% of cases had been correctly classified. Including 5 smoking and alcohol consumption variabs, together with 9 psychological variables, smoking state, years of smoking , neuroticism, unfulfilled need for distance, anti-emotionality,
supression of anxiety. Cigarettes per day and alcohol consumption variables selected 88.9% of cases had been correctly classified.
These results supported the hypotheses and found an interaction of smoking and psychological variables for cancer development.
